Indy Go Green

Gandhi spoke truth when he said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” And most would agree, meaningful change starts at home.

The Indiana Circular Economy Initiative (ICEI) has declared a statewide goal of reaching 50% recycling, or diversion from landfill and incineration. Within the ICEI, this goal includes food waste diversion as a component of recycling. A circular economy, as opposed to a linear economy, puts raw materials back into reuse, again and again, limiting waste and preserving value. Unlike the recycling of manufactured products, the recycling of food waste is fairly straight forward and, at Indy Go Green, we keep it super simple.

Indy Go Green is a curbside pick-up service turning residential food scraps, and other organic waste, into nutrient-rich compost. Focused on Marion County, Indy Go Green offers Indianapolis neighborhoods and communities the opportunity to work together on eliminating unnecessary waste. We work with community leaders, or neighborhood board members, to create hype around minimizing trash pick up and converting “waste” into a usable resource. We focus on neighborhoods, or pockets of the county, in an effort to minimize our own vehicle emissions.

After signing up, each customer is provided a repurposed 5-gallon bucket, a 7-gallon compostable liner (that we replace at each pick up) and an easy to read “What is Compostable” graphic. Indy Go Green provides bi-weekly curbside pick up, an annual impact report, 2.5-5 gals of finished compost in Spring, and text reminders if needed.

Indy Go Green offers free weekly tips and tricks for utilizing food “scraps” that might normally land in our kitchen bins as well as other environmental thoughts and topics in our Blog section. We are working to sell several eco-friendly kitchen products, handmade by our team and other local artisans. Most importantly, Indy Go Green offers a composting consulting service. Do you want to compost at home but don’t know where to start? Contact us. We will work together to plan and build a system that works best for you and your family.
